Overview

GranuFlo is a dialysis medication that can be used to treat kidney failure or kidney disease. When kidney disease occurs, it can present as chronic or as acute; both are dangerous. When the kidneys begin failing they cannot filter the blood, and toxins begin to build up. Dialysis treatments, like GranuFlo, help to rid the body of the toxins that the kidneys cannot filter out.

Treatment

GranuFlo® and NaturaLyte®are products manufactured by Fresenius Medical Care and used by patients on dialysis to treat acute and chronic renal failure. GranuFlo formulations are the only marketed products to contain the powder form of acetic acid, sodium diacetate. Because GranuFlo uses sodium diacetate, it doubles the amount of acetate in dialysate compared to formulations made with acetic acid.

There were approximately 260,000 patients using the GranuFlo product in 2012.

The Problem

Due to problems with the concentration of these products used in the recommended doses, potential high serum bicarbonate levels in patients undergoing hemodialysis may contribute to metabolic alkalosis, which is a significant risk factor associated with low blood pressure, hypokalemia, hypoxemia, hypercapnia, and cardiac arrhythmia. Key injuries include cardiac arrest and death.
