Overview

IVC (or inferior vena cava) Filters are small, spider-like devices used prevent blood clots. These filters are placed in the largest vein in the body, the inferior vena cava, which returns blood from the legs to the heart. The purpose of these blood clot filters is to filter the blood and trap blood clots before they can cause serious harm. IVC Filters have been used for years in the medical field, but have come under scrutiny as many brands have been found to be defective.

The Problem

While IVC Filters have prevented many blood clots, some types of IVC Filters can pose a serious risk to those who have them implanted. Manufacturers such as Bard, Cook, Greenfield and others may have been producing defective IVC Filters for years which have been responsible for many injuries and deaths. Often these injuries are caused by the filter fracturing and puncturing a vein or moving to a different place in the body. Internal bleeding or damage to the vein can follow the fracture of the filter. In some cases, doctors are even unable to remove the filter from the body.

Injuries

When an IVC Filter fails and causes internal injury it can lead to many life threatening injuries. These injuries include: internal bleeding, hematoma, or nerve injury, pulmonary embolus, perforation or other serious damage to the inferior vena cava, infection, surgery to repair, severe chest pain, cardiac tamponade, and ventricular tachycardia. In some cases, the blood clot filter cannot be removed with surgery because it has grown into the vein and presents far too great of a risk to remove.
